Is KESC Implying all Karachiites Are Thieves?

As part of its efforts to curb power theft, the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has come up with a unique way of reminding consumers that stealing electricity results in negative consequences, however, the power utility has ignored the fact that in the process it is humiliating the bill-paying and law abiding consumers.

The KESC has printed a shameful slogan on electricity bills, which goes as: “Hum bijli churatay hain tub hi hamaray bachay iskoolon main garmi say behaal hotay hain” (Since we [KESC’s consumers] steal electricity, our children have to suffer the heat in schools.)For those who pay their bills on time and still endure long hours of load shedding, this is like rubbing salt into the wounds.

Those consumers who are being sent a bill obviously have legal connection, and even if they are stealing power through the kunda (hook) system, then it is the KESC’s inefficiency of not being able to take stern action against power thieves that is to blame.

Humiliating the law-abiding citizens through implying that they are power thieves is a strategy that makes little sense.Instead of hurting the self-esteem of legal consumers, the KESC should take measures to improve flaws in its distribution system and reduce line losses.

Talking to DT, many citizens said they felt offended by the humiliating slogans printed on the KESC bills.They said if the government was unable to address the citizens’ woes, which have been worsened due to the tariff increase; it should at least ask the KESC to remove such language from bills.

Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan as Governor Sindh - Karachi

Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan Monday resigned from the post of Governor Sindh. He has left for Dubai and his resignation yet to be accepted by the President of Pakistan. Speaker Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khoro took over as Acting Governor Sindh.

Governor Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan (born March 2, 1963) studied in the prestigious Dow Medical College, Karachi. As a student he had a penchant for politics and emerged as a prominent leader of a popular student organization, APMSO, a student wing of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). The MQM is the third largest political party of Pakistan and the second largest in Sindh, having representation in the Federal Parliament of Pakistan, the Sindh Provincial Assembly and the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly. The party enjoys a large following in all units of the federation because of its welfare-oriented egalitarian political manifesto impacted by Mr. Altaf Hussain, the populist leader of the toiling masses. After graduation, he remained the head of the Medical Aid Committee – poor patients' welfare entity of the party. Gradually, he became a front rank political figure of the MQM. On his return from almost ten years of political exile in London, he was appointed to the position of the Governor of the province of Sindh. Dr. Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan assumed the charge of his office on December 27, 2002 as the youngest Governor of Sindh. He is the longest serving Governor of any province of Pakistan since its inception in 1947. Earlier in 1990, he was the youngest Minister in the Provincial cabinet of Sindh, holding the portfolios of Housing and Town Planning. Subsequently, he was also assigned the additional charge of Environment and Public Health Engineering Departments.

Shab-e-Miraj Observed With Religious Fervour - Karachi

Shab-e-Mairaj-un-Nabi (Peace Be Upon Him) was observed across the country on Friday night with great respect and religious fervour.
The Muslims every year on 27th of Rajab (Islamic calendar) observe Shab-e-Miraj in which the Holy Prophet (PBUH) went on a special journey to meet Allah Almighty, crossing seven skies on the heavenly animal named ‘al-Buraq.’
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) continued his heavenly tour until he reached close to the Throne of Allah Almighty and attained the utmost nearness to Him. After drinking from the Divine fountain of spiritual knowledge he came down to impart knowledge to mankind.
On that Night of Ascent, Allah Almighty also gave the order of the five daily Salat (Prayers) as being mandatory upon Muslims.
Faithful gathered at mosques after Isha to offer special prayers that continued till Fajr, while different gatherings and Mahafil-e-Naat were arranged to mark the holy night.
Ulema and religious scholars in their sermons highlighted the teachings and various aspects of the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
The houses, streets and specially mosques were decorated with colorful pennants and buntings whereas at night these were illuminated with lights, candles and oil lamps.
Besides, people visited graves of their near and dear ones, seeking Allah Almighty’s blessings for the departed souls.
Special security arrangements were made for observance of Shab-e-Miraj throughout the country.

The Youth Of Karachi Are Planning A Huge Independence Day Present For Their Compatriots This August

KARACHI:  The youth of Karachi are planning a huge Independence Day present for their compatriots this August when they will attempt to break the Guinness world record for the largest number of people singing a national anthem simultaneously.

The present record – which was set in Pune, India, on January 12, 2010 – featured 104,637 people singing ‘Vande Mataram,’ one of India’s most popular national songs. However, some confusion exists about the 2010 record, because “Vande Mataram” is not the actual national anthem of India.
“We have contacted the Guinness World Records to rectify this record… We are waiting for their response and correct record details,” said Abid Beli, an entrepreneur with the heart of a social worker and one of the focal persons organising the record challenge in Karachi.
Should that record be set aside, the previous one set by 5,000 plus people singing the Philippines’ national anthem Lupang Hinirang would be recognised again. Either way Abid and his fellow organiser Waqas Pai say they and their volunteers will be prepared.
On August 14, they are hoping to attract a record crowd in Karachi’s Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim to sing the national anthem and rewrite the record — in Pakistan’s name this time. Permission to use the ground has been sought from the city district government Karachi and other agencies and the organisers expect approval some time later this month.
Several of their well-wishers have suggested that the anthem-singing record be attempted in multiple locations such as Lahore, Islamabad and other cities and also simultaneously in the United States, the United Kingdom and other parts of the globe. This may sound like a good idea but Abid shoots it down, citing logistical headaches. “The event is not very far away, and we have to put a lot of things together,” he says matter-of-factly.
Abid says it was Waqas, an IT wizard, who came up with the idea of a national anthem day. A little research helped the two men find a relevant record category on the Guinness World platform. “We have already opened a claim ticket with the Guinness World Records, mentioning our record bid,” he pointed out. “They have acknowledged our record attempt and will take around four weeks to respond with their requirements and suggestions for the record.”
Neither of them has ever sung before a crowd or attempted anything like this previously. Yet they and every single person present at the venue will have to sing the complete anthem loud and clear, as per the rules of the Guinness Book of World Records. “So everyone will be singing for themselves and for the crowd,” he explained.
Their motivation for the event is drawn from the conditions prevailing in parts of the country that struggles to beat a terrorism stereotype. “No one is spared the turmoil in our country from the common [person] to an industrialist and from showbiz personalities to politicians. Everyone is affected,” Abid explained.
To deflect some of the gloom and doom and lift the spirit of the people, the two men turned to the national anthem and drew strength from it. There was an outpouring of public support for them. “People are excited and enthusiastic about breaking the record,” Abid said. “This event will send a strong message to the world that the people of Pakistan are standing tall for their country and are there for their country.”
Initially, they invited their friends and colleagues on their Facebook event page. But then young university students and others spread the word and joined the initiative. Already, people have begun to register as volunteers for the event – which will be held in the fasting month of Ramazan. Nevertheless, people have promised to turn out in large numbers to break the record, organisers say. At this point they say they are looking for about 2,000 volunteers.
Abid recognises the need for sponsors and is in contact with some prospective firms. Sponsorship would be needed especially to invite the Guinness World Record judges to witness the event and award the certificate on the spot. The organisers would also have to raise funds for the judges’ fees as well as hotel and travel expenses. In addition, Abid says, “We will require a lot of marketing and a lot of celebrity endorsements for this event”. But it is well worth the effort because Pakistanis believe they are capable of crossing this and many other milestones.
